The Kansas Cavalry was organized in 1973 following Governor Robert Docking’s leading a delegation of Kansas business leaders to Japan. The concept of using private citizens to promote foreign investment in Kansas worked so well that Governor Docking believed it would be equally effective closer to home. He also believed it was time that Kansans became more involved in the economic development of their state.
Governor Docking recruited Overland Park banker Ben Craig to be the Cavalry’s first Commanding General. Initially, there were between 50 and 75 members, many personally recruited by Governor Docking. Since then, the organization has continued to grow and change to meet current challenges. A variety of Kansans, including businesspeople, manufacturers, educators, professionals and chamber and economic development executives, make up today’s Cavalry.
